I have the plugin rerouting the 404s to the “Home” page and that works as intended.

However, once the home page is loaded, it still displays the bad url as the url address.

For example, if someone types in “https://voteforedpope.com/bozo” and the “bozo” page doesn’t exist, the plugin reroutes to the home page, but the url at the top shows “https://voteforedpope.com/bozo” (the bad url).

I would like for it to just show the home page url: https://voteforedpope.com/

It might just be one of the plugin settings that fixes it, but it’s not clear to me.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

This is exactly what this plugin is NOT made for.

What you mean is a redirect. A redirect results in a HTTP code 301 (or 302). HTTP 301 means “the page you are looking for still exists, but has moved to a new URL”.

A HTTP code 404 means “the page you are looking for does not exist (anymore)”.

There are several views, but my opinion is that for two reasons you should definitely use a real 404:

First, it is incomprehensible to a human visitor why he is redirected to another page which he did not request. So using a 301 instead of a 404 is a bad user experience.

Second, the wrong HTTP code is sent to search engines if they try to access a non existing page. A 404 tells Google & Co to delete the page from the index. So using a 301 instead of a 404 is bad for search engines.

Using a redirect instead of a real 404 is bad for users and bad for search engines. You should not do that. My humble opinion.

    Is that helpful for you?

    Peter

    Got it, that makes sense.

    Thanks.
