Support » Fixing WordPress » How to remove ads

  • Hi,

Suddendly a lot of ads started appearing on my website. I don’t have AdSense on, I already deactivated all the plugins and I’ve used a starter theme to create my own theme.

How can I make the ads disappear? It’s very bad because sometimes the ads refer to competition websites.

    Thanks for your help!

Sucuri scan does not suggest any malware. Which is good!

    Try:
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Seventeen, etc.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
    – implementing some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.

Your site is showing ads from adsense

You have one specific ad code on your page plus the Page-Level code, which is also responsible to deliver ads in random spots in case QuickStart is enabled. I wrote about how to disable the latter one [ Moderated: Link redacted.]

I would follow the advice t-p gave and find out which plugin or maybe if the theme adds the ad code. It doesn’t necessarily have to be malicious.

If you have an AdSense account, check if the AdSense publisher ID in the source codes matches your publisher ID. It starts with “ca-pub-“. I am not posting it here since you probably don’t want it to appear in public. If the IDs are matching then it was probably added at one point and forgotten.

    Side note to @webzunft,
Thanks for the help but spreading your site link like that is spamming. If you want to help then please do here. Completely here, do not send people to your site as a reference. Please don’t, thanks.

@t-p, appreciate the moderation. I can see why you think this is a spammy link. Would a link to the AdSense manual work? Explaining QuickStart in detail in a reply seemed overkill to me.
