    Hi,

    For “Make sure that the used domains already point to your WP-root” – do you mean redirecting useddomain.com to its NameCheap registrar [REDIRECT DOMAIN] to maindomain.com or creating a A-Record?

  • Actually, it is a two-step process (from what I know).

    1. Changes in DNS: Creating A record for example.com and http://www.example.com to point to the existing site’s IP address.

    2. Changes in the host: This is done in cPanel (or whatever equivalent panel). If the existing site is installed at /home/username/public_html then the new site needs to point to this directory as well.

    I hope that helps!

    Hi Pothi, thanks for your help.

    Here’s what I do :

    In NameCheap, I just set custom nameservers of USED DOMAIN to that of my hosting where USED DOMAIN is an addon domain on the cPanel.

    WP ROOT DOMAIN is also another addon domain on the same cPanel which is a WordPress installation where MDMoSS plugin is installed.

    So using the Advanced DNS Zone Editor (in cPanel), how to point USED DOMAIN to WP ROOT DOMAIN? Is it:

    a) Create A-Record with USED DOMAIN pointing to cPanel’s IP? (but this IP address, though shared, is for MAIN ROOT DOMAIN)
    b) Just use cPanel > Domain > Redirect > to redirect USED DOMAIN to WP ROOT DOMAIN?
    c) or …?

    Well, if you use cPanel, then, I believe, there is an easier way to “point USED DOMAIN to WP ROOT DOMAIN” by adding the new domain as alias to the existing domain. I strongly believe alias will work. But, haven’t tested it myself as I haven’t got a cPanel based host.

    If you still want to use it as “add-on” domain, you may change the document root to point to the existing domain’s document root.

    Hi Matthias,

    Got distracted by work. Anyway, I was still stuck at “square one” – how exactly to point USED DOMAIN to WP ROOT DOMAIN.

    I’m kindda lost after installing/activating the plugin. Will try out the alias method as suggested by Pothi – so is this the way?

    dworg,
    1. Do you have access to DNS settings fro you domain?
    1.1. Do you set CNAME for your subdomain to point to main domain OR
    1.2. Do you set A for subdomain to point to same IP address as main domain?

    2. Do you have access to cPanel or DirectAdmin on your hosting account?
    2.1. In DirectAdmin, when pt.1. is done, set under main domain settings DOMAIN POINTER as an ALIAS, to point your subdomain to main domain.
    2.2. Not quite sure how it is in cPanel, but will check if needed.

    Than, wait up to 24h to refresh DNS (pt.1), and depend how often server configuration is refresh, wait up to 24h for refresh of your pointer configuration and try again.

    @idarek,

    thanks for responding πŸ™‚

    i was searching for configuration examples for different providers and hosting environments but could not find any good sources. if any of you users around have good resources, please share them here with others. we could make a sticky topic where we share these settings from different providers…

    Here’s my steps :

    1. cPanel > Domains > Parked Domains > Add Domain > add USED DOMAIN

    2. Manage Redirection > pointing to WP ROOT DOMAIN

    3. WP ROOT DOMAIN Dashboard > Tools > Multidomain –> Nice upgrade πŸ™‚ >

    4. Settings > $_SERVER[“HTTP_HOST”] > Save Changes

    5. Mappings > set up used domain <=> original URI ie. /pages

    When I go to USED DOMAIN at browser, it redirects to WP ROOT DOMAIN and auto redirect to the original URI /pages.

    However, I got 2 questions :

    1. I originally thought the URL at browser will remain at USED DOMAIN (also known as masked to USED DOMAIN) – but it redirects and URL displays ie. wprootdomain.com/pages instead. Is is possible to mask at USED DOMAIN though browser is displaying the original URI?

    2. If that’s the case, why not just set up redirection directly at domain registrar ie. NameCheap?

    Hi Matt,
    Good idea that will also save you some time.
    I will prepare mine in next couple days as I am using CloudFlare for DNS and DirectAdmin on Hosting account which is quite popular. Even that my issue with SSL still not perfect (need to add to redirect in plugin to same page to make it work) but is working, and that most important.

    @dworg,
    your description sounds like you have some kind of redirection from provider-level. you could try to disable the plugin and see if this makes any changes – i guess not.
    this would mean that your USED DOMAIN is not “pointing” to the wordpress root, instead just being redirected there.
    it is hard to imagine that the “auto redirect” from root to the /pages uri is triggered by the plugin :/

    do you have any other plugins from testing installed left?

    Yes Matt,

    So how exactly do we point the USED DOMAIN to WP ROOT DOMAIN? (which is my original question)

    From https://wordpress.org/plugins/multiple-domain-mapping-on-single-site/installation/ .. I understand and have done 1.1 Creating A-Record pointing to IP of WP ROOT DOMAIN.

    1.2 In your hosting environment, you must configure all domains to point into the same directory as your main domain <– how do you do that in cPanel?

    @dworg,
    you could use google for such questions: https://blog.cpanel.com/managing-multiple-domains-from-a-single-cpanel-account/ (found after ~ 10 sec. in google)

    πŸ™‚ Unfortunately, I’ve missed the FAQ on its incompatibility of this plugin to WooCommerce. I’m trying to set USED DOMAIN to a shop page in WP ROOT DOMAIN. Too bad then.

    @dworg

    What’s the problem do you have? I got this plugin set with WooCommerce and is working well. WooCommerce need to be set correctly as well to work with it, but there is no problem with plugin – and no incompatibility :). After recent update of this plugin it is working even better.

    Let me know, and will try to help you if I will be able to.
