I’ve resized the height of my header so it is somewhat shorter than the default (as described at: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/is-it-possible-to-change-the-height-of-the-header-image?replies=3), and a couple of months ago was able to upload a header image that fit the resolution of my adjusted header size – I was able to somehow bypass the automatic cropping that the theme usually has you do when you upload the header image.

I went to upload a new header image recently, and can’t seem to find a way to bypass the automatic cropping – so if I upload an image at my desired resolution, the theme wants me to crop it to the default header size – even though I’m not using that size. This ends up cutting off some of the side of my desired header.

Is there still a way to bypass the cropping altogether? My current workaround has been to add some blank space to the bottom of my header image so that the entire length of the image is kept in at the theme’s default header resolution, and then my edits to my child theme just make the header shorter. But I’m not sure if that will become a problem at some point, and would like to figure out how to just upload a header image of any resolution.

Thanks so much for the help.

    Hi Alison8,

Since Hemingway automatically crops the header depending on what screen size it is being display at (due to the aspect ratio of the actual header being different at different sizes), there’s no actual “correct size”.

The phrase that WordPress uses in the theme options about the header image not being cropped at the size specified by the theme is a bit unfortunate, since there’s no way not to crop the background image when it’s supposed to fill an entire background of variable width and height. The best advice I can offer you is to experiment with different sizes until you find one that looks alright on most sizes and devices.
