I have a client who currently has a website on a horrible CMS, not WordPress. He also wants it redesigned. He has a blog on his site, which does well that I need to migrate off the CMS.

Any recommendations the best way to do this? The site is really messed up with a lot of redirects, the home page is not even named index. I need to preserve all of the current file names to maintain current SEO and search engine rankings.

My plan was to originally redesign in WordPress, but I am afraid to with all the current redirects. Correct me if I am wrong, but won’t WordPress create additional redirects to each file with its permalink file structure. So I was thinking maybe a static site redesign would be best, and keep all the file name the same.

  • WordPress does not use file names in the url. Every request is sent through index.php and WordPress uses the url to match against a list of rules to determine what page to load. You can try and match the existing permalink structure but it would be easier to create manual 1 to 1 redirects to the new WordPress urls.

As far as importing goes, if you can export the data into a CSV file a developer can easily create a custom import solution for you or you can try a plugin like CSV Importer.
