How to make surname required?

I can see where the participant_fields are created in class-wc-registrations-checkout.php and I think I could just add a required value there to make the surname field required. However, I’d rather not because I’d have to make the update every time the plugin updates.

Is there a way to make the participant-surname required without directly editing the plugin files?
