How to make featured image on front page appear as thumbnail and not cropped (6 posts)

I am pretty much new to web building/designing. On my front page, the featured images are cropped, which makes the site look funky. How can I edit the css to make the featured images appear as thumbnails and not cropped? My website is new.platefulofyum.com

I need all the help and clear cut instructions I can get. Last time I messed with the function.php I had a parse error and had to restore my previous version (I'd rather not go through that again).

    Seriously clueless. Help!

You'd probably need a plugin to do this or modify the code in index.php where it calls the_post_thumbnail()

But seriously - the theme creates HUGE pages when it really shouldn't. There's no reason it needs to download a large sized image just to show a thumbnail. I'm looking over the theme this week to get some of these issues nailed down. It's free so I can't complain too much.

Due to the code it's hard to tell the correct size for anything since it seems to pull a 1000x640 image for EVERYTHING and then crops using hidden overflows. It's murder when looking at the page on a mobile device.
