So I really like to keep my page names/slugs short and sweet

    /events
    /doctors
    /dispensaries
    /news
    /videos
    etc.

But apparently this isn’t great for SEO.

Is there a way for me to keep my super short page names, yet still benefit from a better slug for SEO?

  • Hi,

You can make your page titles and slugs be whatever works best for your audience. For some sites having shorter page titles and slugs work best for their audience, for others longer or a mix is best. They do not need to be the same. This guide explains more about how to have a good page title: https://yoast.com/page-titles-seo/.

And this one goes into detail on how to best SEO your page slugs: https://yoast.com/slug/

Ok I just read the Title and now reading the Slug.

So is it possible to have my url like this:

    http://www.ohiocannabis.com/dispensaries

So that I can easily tell people the URL and they can remember it to go to these main pages like this very easy.

But somehow get a Slug of “Ohio Medical Marijuana Dispensaries”?

Having to tell someone to go to:

    http://www.ohiocannabis.com/ohio-medical-marijuana-dispensaries

Is a lot more cumbersome, much less streamlined and will get lost in translation

So is there a happy medium for what I want to do so I can take advantage of the better quality page & post Slugs for SEO?

Can I use my Quick Redirect plugin or something so I can still give out the shorter URL, of just /dispensaries – yet still benefit from the longer Slug Ohio-Medical-Marijuaan-Dispensaries on google?

By default, WordPress uses the post/page title as the slug. But you can change it so the post title (what appears on the page), the SEO title (what appears in the browser tab and search engines) and the slug (what appears in the URL) are different.

This means it is possible to have “Ohio Medical Marijuana Dispensaries” appear on the page while the URL is http://www.ohiocannabis.com/dispensaries

Hmm so I just tried that and it doesn’t seem to be working for me.

I edited my already published “dispensaries” page permalink to dispensaries

The SEO title was already set

As soon as I went back to update the slug, it was changing the permalink.

So how do I get it to stick?

Or are you saying I don’t need to worry about setting the slug to get a green light with Yoast SEO?

I can just leave the slugs whatever short code I want as long as I’m updating the page title and the SEO title?

@johnnyscience The slug and the permalink are the same thing.

As for the green bullet, we understand that sometimes it’s tempting to attempt to get all green lights on the SEO analysis. However, these are general guidelines, not strict rules that will hurt your ranking. If you feel your page is properly formatted and has a good user experience, then these warnings can be safely ignored and you should not sacrifice user experience to get the green bullet. You can read more about this on this article on our website: https://yoast.com/want-green-bullet-wp-seo/

Ahh thanks for that info/link @devnihil it was helpful to understand the green bullets.

I will try to still get as many green bullets as possible of course.

    Thanks for the info!
