When writing a blog post, how do I insert a link to another site? I see the blue link option, but...

Do I keyboard/type the link address first, then click the blue link option? Or, do I click on the blue link option, and then type the address or what next? I know it is basic and obvious, but I cannot figure it out?!

    you click the blue link
a pop up window will ask for url - enter it and click ok
    add words you want linked
click blue link again to close the tag

so in the end in the editor it will look like so
    <a href="http://example.com/stuffhere">some stuff here</a>

will come out like so in post on front end
    some stuff here

ok. so i click on the blue link and it opens up a window to enter the url. pretty standard stuff. i do so and click ok. the standard html code then appears in the post. there was never another window for the text associated with the link. so of course when i view the post it is just the code. then sometimes it makes all the text after a huge link. this is infuriating. this is the most basic function of web publishing and it should work. i have been putting links into pages since 1995, i am so frustrated. if i were doing this on my site it would take a second and I have wasted hours over this scouring docs and forums to no effect. either wordpress is buggy or sucks. any suggestions?

oh and if i manually insert code it still doesn't work. and when i switch to html, it gets garbled. so i change it in html mode again and still doesn't work.
