# How to hightlight code without a plugin?

 * I am a theme developer, curious to understand how to highlight source code without
   using a plugin. How the whole thing works?
 * For example i would like to highlight php code wrapped inside pre tags.

 * I’ve seen a lot of sites that use [SyntaxHighlighter](http://alexgorbatchev.com/SyntaxHighlighter/)
   for that. It only requires JavaScript and it looks like all you’d have to do 
   is enqueue the appropriate CSS and JavaScript files.
