    Hi there, imagine this:

The following categories exist and used in multiple posts: football, hockey, tennis,TV,DVD,Tuners

Now I’d like to assign two main categories and use previous categories as subcategories, for example:

    SPORTS: football,hockey,tennis
    HOME THEATRE: TV,DVD,Tuners

How can I create a new “main” category and assign existing categories as subcategories? How to update existing posts?

  • Just set up two new categories and then edit your existing categories to use one of these two new ones as parents. WP will do the rest.

    Great!!
Is it also possible to change some existing categories to be subcategories of an existing category?

Yup, just go to posts->category and click edit for the category…you can assign parent there

There’s only one problem left: once hierarchies are settled properly, if a post is assigned to a subcategory, it will not be assigned automatically to it’s parent category. Is there a trick to achieve this?
