Support » Fixing WordPress » How to group blog post titles on one page

  • I will have several blog posts in the future.

    I do not want to have to scroll down the page to see each title.

    I would like to have my options explained clearly on one page then, be able to click on the link to get the the actual blog article. Here is my blog.

    The blog articles are not clearly defined for my patrons.

    How do i create a linkable title list.

  • You need to edit the template page on your theme that shows your posts so that the_exerpt() is used rather than the_content().
    This will be blog.php, or index.php.

    I am a complete novice to WordPress. I am using the latest template provided by WordPress, I believe 2012. How do I edit the Template design step by step?

    Do not edit the Twenty Twelve theme. It is the current default WordPress theme and having access to an original, unedited, copy of the theme is vital in many situations. First create a child theme for your changes.

    How do I create a child theme to the WordPress 2012 to make my Blog page titles appear in one place so that they can be clicked on separately instead of needing to scroll down to the older posts?

    I am a novice. Can I please have the exact coding needed and instructions on how to make these changes?

    See the link above – those are as basic as it gets.

    <?php query_posts($query_string . '&cat=-3,-8'); ?>
     <?php if ( have_posts() ) : while ( have_posts() ) : the_post(); ?>
     <h2><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h2>
     <?php endwhile; else: ?>
     <p>Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.</p>
     <?php endif; ?>

    That was a quick copy and paste the edit from…

    It will result in a list of <h2> headers displaying post titles. The very first line has the query_posts() function. That function can accept a lot of criteria for the search to get posts i.e. specific categories.

    Then the 2nd line begins to loop through all posts. There are various values that can be output within the look which ends at “endif”. You may want to output a 30 word excerpt for example.
