Support » Fixing WordPress » How to get categories in capital letter in URL

I’m moving a client’s site from Joomla to wordpress. In Joomla they have been using an extension that listed categories in capital letters but slugs in WordPress default to small letter so am getting a 404 error on the same URL in WordPress site. Perhaps an example will help. Here is the URL in Joomla site: http://dubai-car-dealer.com/Vehicles/SUV/ but in wordpress test site it is listed as http://dubai-car-dealer.com.jimsoni.com/wp/vehicles/suv

If I capitalize them by typing them in categories slug it defaults back to small letters so that won’t work. Unfortunately in WP “vehicles” are not the same as “Vehicles”. This means that when I replace the Joomla site with the new WordPress site the visitors will get many 404 errors. There are too many categories to do link forwarding unless there is an automated way to do it.

Why can’t you use the lowercase? Does SUV have to be in caps?

If the issue is because of SEO, then you should set up 301 redirects (in your .htaccess file) for all the URLs for which you have this problem.

Dear Juggledad, the problem is that if the old link has SUV and the new link suv, we would get a 404 error. Not sure how to redirect hundreds of categories that are small letters to capital

    Hi @nancedelia,

You can make the same URL as on Joomla. You can not make the slug in Capital letter but you can make the URL in caps.

For this you need to create a post and the URL would be created automatically after that you can update the URL and make the letter capitals.

Or You can make the URL in small letter and hit the URL with CAPS. WP would not give you a 404. It would automatically redirect you on the same page. WP is able to handle the Capital and Small letter issue.

Let me know if you have any question regarding it.

    Thanks,
    Sami

@sasiddiqui Salam, thanks for the reply. Actually I have hundreds of categories and what I’m worried about are the category URL that are created automatically. Most of the incoming links in Joomla site are to category pages. Even though in Joomla they were capital, they are in small letters in WordPress.

Walaikum assalam Nance Delia, you can update the category URLs.

When you create any category at that time category permalink is generated. You can update that permalink right after that or you can also create your desire category permalink while creating the category.

Let me know if you need my help to do that.

    Thanks,
    Sami

Thanks @sasiddiqui. Is there a setting in wordpress where it will list capital letters as the same as small letter. For instance whether a user types “suv” or “SUV” it will land them on the same page.

URL in Joomla site is: http://dubai-car-dealer.com/Vehicles/SUV/
URL in WordPress site will be: http://dubai-car-dealer.com/vehicles/suv/

I do not want to recreate permalinks for hundreds of categories and don’t know how to do this.

Don’t understand this passage completely. Is there a link that explain this:
When you create any category at that time category permalink is generated. You can update that permalink right after that or you can also create your desire category permalink while creating the category.

Try Anyone of the mentoned below plugins:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/custom-permalinks/
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/permalinks-customizer/

These plugins provide you the functionality to create the custom permalink while creating the category . Or you can edit the category and change the permalink whenever you want and whatever you want to.

    Thanks,
    Sami

Thanks @sasiddiqui for writing this great plugin and pointing me to it. Will I be able to specify that each category be in Capital Letters. I don’t see this capability in it.

I also have started another thread as am having trouble importing external images into posts imported in via “Press This” bookmarklet. Specifications of different cars are taken from various manufacturers different websites and it is very tedious to save images from five different sites to incorporate with custom content for that car.

@sasiddiqui. I figured it out. Installed “WP Force Lowercase URLs” and it automatically does 301 redirects by converting capital URLs into lowercase URL. Thanks bhai for all your help.

This plugin works for WordPress sites but now Joomla site which was moved to a subdirectory is broken, even the capital links there are no longer working. Any tip would be appreciated.
