No, you don’t need a plugin to embed videos. Could you please specify the type of video you are trying to embed?
For the meantime, if it’s a YouTube video, here are the different ways to embed.
1. Copy and paste the video URL where you want the video to appear on your page in your editor. Be sure you’re in the Visual and not code editor.
2. Visit YouTube – click on SHARE – Choose the EMBED option and copy the embed code. If you’re using the classic editor switch to the CODE editing mode and paste your code. If you’re using the new block editor, add a CUSTOM HTML block and post the YouTube embed code into the block. After pasting, you can click on the PREVIEW tab on the block to see your video preview.
3. You can simply use the YouTube block which requires just posting the YouTube video URL. Just add the YouTube block where you want your video and paste the video URL in.

I tried what you suggested in the 2nd option and it worked!
(I don’t know why I didn’t think to do this myself. I think my brain is on another planet half the time tbh!)
