Support » Plugin: WooCommerce » How to display a cart when a product is added?

    Hi,

We added a WooCommerce store to our WordPress website (currently version 7.3.0 and WP 6.1.1). We have Astra (free) and Elementor up-to-date.

The problem is that when users are on the store (product listing) page they can click Add to Cart under any item, and the button will show a checkmark that it was added, but then there is no way for the user to get to their cart unless they click through to the individual product page, add to cart again, and only then will a cart link show up.

I have been all through the settings and customizations and can’t find anything. I spent an hour on Google and it seems like this isn’t a common problem, so I assume we just missed something somewhere. (I feel like requiring users to know the magic combination of clicks to find a cart isn’t good business practice 🙂 )

How can we get the cart to display on the product listing page if an item is added?

(Note that we can’t add the cart to the header since in Astra you can’t have both a search and a cart, and we need the search – so we want to add it on the product page)

I don’t know how Astra works, but maybe you can add the cart to the footer, since you can’t add it to the header.
In the footer you can add the cart with a Widgets

Thanks for the reply and the suggestion.

I don’t think adding a cart to the footer will work, because users aren’t going to look for a shopping cart to appear in the site footer, especially as they would have to scroll quite far down the page to find it.

What I am trying to accomplish is to show an easy-to-find cart icon or link to the cart on the product listing page, since you can add to cart directly from the listing page.

The widget adds a cart page, not just an icon (i.e. it shows each product, with a description, quantity, amount, etc) and this would not work in a header or a footer.

I really just need a cart icon … is it possible? WooCommerce is a well-known and popular application so there must be some way to display a cart.

Edit: as a workaround, I found a setting that will forward the user to the shopping cart page when they’ve clicked “add to cart” instead of just putting a checkmark. So at least they don’t have to search for the cart.

I already told you that I don’t know how ASTRA works.
I don’t understand why you can’t add the cart icon.
I have a link to the cart in the footer and it doesn’t seem bad to me, you have to offer several options for the user to enter to pay for their purchase.

Victor Aquino has many tutorials on Astra, and this one is on how to edit Astra’s header.

    Hi Miguel,

Thanks again for the reply. I don’t speak Spanish so I can’t read that article. My question is not about Astra. I mentioned it because usually people ask what theme I am using. The question is about WooCommerce and how I can get the shopping cart icon to display on the product listing page. Not in the footer where users won’t find it. And Astra won’t let me add it in the header. So the product listing page is the only option.

If you don’t understand why I can’t add a cart icon, that’s fine, perhaps someone else who knows how WooCommerce works will answer my thread. Thanks!

    Hi @station7 ,

    Thanks for reaching out!

How can we get the cart to display on the product listing page if an item is added?

I understand that you would like the cart to display on the shop page once an item is added, is this correct?

The problem is that when users are on the store (product listing) page they can click Add to Cart under any item, and the button will show a checkmark that it was added, but then there is no way for the user to get to their cart unless they click through to the individual product page, add to cart again, and only then will a cart link show up

This behavior is generally specific to the theme you are using, although can also be triggered by the Elementor plugin.

Although this forum is dedicated to WooCommerce core support, I’d like to guide you in achieving the results you are looking for, for your site.

It is possible to add the search bar and cart to the header with the Astra theme by navigating to Dashboard > Appearance > Customize, selecting the Header Builder option, clicking in the area where you would like to add the search and cart widgets, and adding them, as seen in the screenshot below:

The search and cart widgets will be available in the header, site-wide.

On the other hand, since this forum is dedicated to WooCommerce core, you can reach out to the dedicated forums for Astra and/or Elementor should you require any further help with this.

    Hope this helps!

Hi @roxannestoltz and thank you very much for the reply. My apologies, I thought that adding a cart functionality to the product page would be a WooCommerce question.

I am not able to follow your instructions since I do not have the “Header Builder” option under Appearance – Customize, but the end result you have shown is exactly what I want to achieve. (I do have a “Header” section but that only allows me to have one or the other, not both, and a WooCommerce section that allows me to configure, but not display, the cart). I have posted a question under Astra and hopefully someone there can assist me to get a shopping cart icon. Thank you again for your assistance.
