How to disiable slick on wordpress galleries

A weird issue I know – the standard wordpress galleries get converted to a slider carousel which is undesirable in this case. Inspecting the output I can see why: “slick” is getting added to divs. Disabling the slideshow plug ins on the site makes no difference. Jetpack isn’t activated.
How can I remove the slick references so I get just a standard gallery?
