Support » Plugin: Video Embed & Thumbnail Generator » How to differentiate more videos on one page in Google Analytics

    Hi, great plugin btw!

I have three videos on a page, serving through CDN. This means the internal play counts don’t work and I have only Google Analytics to tell me what has been viewed. The problem is that the GA shows only summary of all video events on the page and do not differentiate. Is there any way how to switch the things so I can see the statistics per video?

    Thanks,
    Pavel.

If you add title attributes to the shortcode you should be able to get differentiation in Google Analytics.

    [KGVID title="Video 1"]https://cdn.com/video1.mp4[/KGVID]
    [KGVID title="Video 2"]https://cdn.com/video2.mp4[/KGVID]
    [KGVID title="Video 3"]https://cdn.com/video3.mp4[/KGVID]

I’m going to work on using the video URL as an event label if title isn’t available.

The actual link in the shortcode is local. It is then replaced for the CDN link by caching plugin. I tried the title thing, the result was that the title was showing on the page above the video. So used .kgvid_video_meta {display: none;} to hide it.

And I still can’t see the video title anywhere in Google Analytics.

Can you post a link to the page?

Can I send you personal note? There is a marketing campaign running on the web.

I have sent you email. It is different web, also with running campaign but not that sensitive.

It looks like I’m relying on Schema.org tags to get the title metadata for Google Analytics Events and you don’t have Schema tags enabled. Considering that the tags are optional I shouldn’t do that. I’ll work on a fix for it.

Thank you, Kyle. You are very helpfull as always.

I was just checking the page you sent again and I don’t see why the stats wouldn’t be recorded in the WordPress database. I can see the plugin sending the data to WordPress and receiving a valid response. Are you not seeing any stats in the admin area?

Yes, there are some numbers in WP but they differ from the GA reports. For example I have 53 starts in GA and about 35 starts in WP. I say about 35 because I did not write the morning stats but I know they were about 3 or five each. Even If I consider zeros for all the three videos, I would have 43 plays in WP vs 53 in GA.

Also, GA gives you views in time. Currently, I solved the issue with Google Tag Manager, but I am waiting for your new version to work with it. The GTM is temporary solution for me.

I know GA gives much better stats than my rudimentary system (which I built a few years ago only by your request) and I have what I think is a fix for the Event Title in place on GitHub. I just want to make sure I understand the whole problem correctly. Do the stats in the WordPress Admin area always diverge so much from the GA stats or do you only see that happen when you serve videos from a CDN? As long as the videos are in the WordPress database they should record stats the same as if they were served locally.

To tell the truth I am not sure. I noticed the different figures recently but also tend to incline to what you mention – the local videos are probably reported correctly. I hope I will have better answer to this in a shor time. Thanks for the fix!

Version 4.6.24 released today has a fix for the missing event title bug. Let me know if you’re still having problems after updating.

Everything seems to be working fine.
    Thanks, Kyle.
