Does anyone have some advice on the best way to do the following:

I have a static website with WP installed for my blog (mysite.com/blog). I’m redesigning my website and will use WP for the entire site and a blog.

Ideally, I would like to take my site down while I design and develop the new one in WP on mysite.com BUT I want to continue blogging so people know I’m still here. The only way I can think to do this is to design and develop the site on my testing server, and then have to go backup and transfer everything to mysite.com, but that seems like double/triple the work.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks!

  • Develop the new site in a sub-folder. When you’re ready, re-configure the new site to take over the root domain using the technique detailed in Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory.

Thanks for the link esmi! Seems easy enough. I think I was making it more difficult in my mind than it had to be.

    So just to verify:

    1. On my CURRENT static site at http://www.mysite.com, I will install WordPress into a new directory for example http://www.mysite.com/wordpress – THIS will allow me to design develop my new WP site and hide it (I can do that with a plugin) while my current static site and blog (www.mysite.com/blog) remain intact and for all the world to see. Right?

    2. When I’m done developing my new WP site and want to take it live, I perform Steps 2-11 and can delete or move my static HTML files from the server.

Now that I typed that, I have one question. If I do the above steps, then I’ll have WordPress installed twice – one at http://www.mysite.com/blog and the other at http://www.mysite.com/wordpress. Would I still need to move my blog into the /wordpress install or should I leave 2 WP installs, keeping my blog separate?

Have I just over complicated things again? LOL
Sorry I’ve worked all weekend and I think my brain is fried.

    Thanks!

    1. Exactly!

    2. Correct.

With regard to the 2 blogs, you could import the content from the old blog into the new one via Tools -> Export/Import. Then apart from a little shuffling of images in older posts & pages, you should be able to completely remove the old blog and have everything running in the one install.

Thanks so much for the help, esmi! I’ve been working with WordPress for almost 5 years now and have never had a situation like this to deal with. I just could not get my head wrapped around the best course to take. Just another reason why I LOVE WordPress!

    You’re welcome. 🙂
