i know very little about blog software. i just installed wordpress an hour ago and it is the first time i have even thought about the mechanics of blog software.
i see that there are these templates that i can install for a particular look&feel. that's cool.
but i was wondering if anyone can point me to a faq/tutorial on how to design my own
    template?
    thanks for any info,

Go to the wiki and start reading the Customizing section. Many useful links!

The best way is to set up a testblog.
Install some css or a theme.
And play with it until it breaks, then mend it, then do it again.
There are some fantastic books on CSS, but nothing can replace tapping away and breaking stuff.

http://w3schools.org/ and check out the CSS tutorials.
Dang, I should have shares on that site for the number of times I've referred it! :)
