How to deactivate NOT remove a widget,, or move a widget from sidebar to sidebar (3 posts)

I have a question on the Widgets page in Admin.

Sometimes I'll build a text (or other customizable) widget and add it to the sidebar. Then, while playing around with the configuration, I might want to remove it temporarily (or just deactivate it), but not lose it completely in case I want to add it back in later. However, I cannot find a way to do this. I can only remove it for good. The same problem exists if I want to move it from one sidebar to another sidebar. I can't move it so I have to remove it completely and then rebuild it again in the other sidebar.

Is there something I am missing here?

If the widget is dependent on a plugin , no need to remove the widget just deactivate the plugin , the widget will dissapear and if you activate the plugin the widget will come back automatically. But if you made the widget via a text widget with custom code then this is not the case , you would have to manually add it back on and all that.

But why would you wanna do that ?

Not sure you understood what I was saying. Let's say that I made a text widget and placed it in sidebar 1. Then, I thought to myself, I'm not sure if I want this there, but I don't want to lose what I created forever. I wish I could just remove it from the sidebar into a holding area on the left, but later could move it back to the sidebar when I desired it again.

Here is another likely more common situation. Let's say I created a text widget and placed it in Sidebar 1, of a two sidebar theme. Then I decide I'd like to simply move it to Sidebar 2. I can't. I have to delete it from Sidebar 1, then create a new one and add it to Sidebar 2.
