    Hey there Give-ers!

First off, thanks to Matt Cromwell for the great support recently.

I’m in a situation where I’m looking to customize the automatic email that gets sent (as a Donation Receipt) to donors. Specifically, I’m just looking to remove the header that says “Donation Receipt” and remove the footer that links to my site.

HI there, thanks for the compliment! This is definitely possible and I’m building out the documentation on this now. But here’s the short version:

    1) Go into the plugin and copy the folder you’ll find in give\templates\emails
    2) Paste that folder into a new folder in your theme like so: your-theme\give\emails.
    3) You can customize those files however you like to get the style of receipt you want.
    4) To Preview your changes, go to “Donations > Settings” then the Email tab. You’ll see a button that says “Preview Donation Receipt”. That will open in a new tab and you can refresh that page whenever you make changes to see the changes live.

Let me know how that goes. Thanks!

Also, if you just want to remove the words “Donation Receipt” you can do that in the Email tab by just deleting that text in the Donation Email Subject.

Thanks, Matt. That worked great to just throw the emails folder into my theme dir and remove the header and footer.

However, about the Donation Email Subject, I had actually already changed that field to a new value, which showed up great as the email subject, but did not actually change the header itself. It remained as “Donation Receipt”.

Sorry, not quite following you. You changed the Donation Email Subject in the Email tab settings? And that worked previously, but it doesn’t work now with the custom templates? Please clarify a bit if you can, thanks!

    Ah, right. Sorry about that.

I had previously changed the Donation Email Subject in the Email tab settings (before I had changed the templates, back when they were the defaults) and the email subject was, in fact, changed as expected, but the h1 did not match that email subject, and instead still read ‘Donation Receipt’.

OK, so where do you stand now? Is this resolved or you’ve got it worked out? Still a little unclear for some reason.

Sorry to be unclear, here, Matt.

My issue is resolved in that I’ve edited the template code to make the email look the way I want.

However, if you’re saying that by changing the Donation Email Subject in the Email tab settings, then it should both change the Email Subject *and* change the header text, then this is not what I had experienced. My header text remained as ‘Donation Receipt’ even when the Donation Email Subject read otherwise.

I just thought I would give you a heads up on that in case it’s a bug.

    Thanks again for the help.

OK, got it. And I just confirmed locally as well. Looks like a bug. We’ll get that worked out quickly. Thanks!

Just an update that I see know where the confusion is, and I lead to that. The “Donation Email Subject” is just for customizing the actual Subject Line of the email, not the email heading/title. You can follow our discussion here:

Ah, great. I see. Thanks again, Matt. I won’t chime in over on that thread, but will say here that I do agree with you that as an improvement request, it could be a nice thing to have an additional field to customize the heading/title.

Well be chatting about it for sure. That’s what our Github Issue tracker is for.
