How to create a thumbnail archive by category

I’m attempting to create a thumbnail archives. Basically what I want to do is have a list of thumbnails that link to their post from a specific category.. yet I’m having a brutal time trying to figure out how to do so. I’ve tried snazzy archives but it’s not what i’m looking for. Does anyone have ideas?
