How to create a new post_type input area? (5 posts)

In the wordpress admin area, we have the standard buttons for page/post where the user can create a new post.

What I am trying to figure out is how to add a new top-level navigation button for allowing a user to input content for a custom post_type.

    For instance:
I want to create a new post_type called events where the user can input their data. No problem there.

Instead of having the user use the regular new-post function inside the posts tab, I would like to create a new tab called 'events' where it would show the regular wp editor etc. Only there would be no category selections or other options. It would automatically just post to the 'set' category belonging to the events tab.

Basically just wanting to create a new top level navigation button that is set to post to an admin specified category.

    Is this possible?

I'm not sure this is exactly what you need? Sounds about right tho....

Thanks for the link but it's not what I am after.

I plan on using quite a few custom fields for my events category, so I would need full access to the write panel.

any ideas on how to do this?

I can't imagine that it's impossible to create a new wp-admin navigation button that will only post to a given 'set' category which is going to be used for custom posts.

I've looked through all the wp codex etc, but there is no documentation that I can find anywhere

There are a number of plug-ins that does this:

Flutter, Magic Fields, More Fields, Pods, etc.

    Or to create one manually:
