How to code layout

ok, i’m new to wordpress and having trouble figuring out how to code my layout to wordpress. i’m using a simple tables layout and someone tried helping me, but we just got the content section and the sidebar ontop of one another. not side by side. could someone please help me with this? maybe instead of using tables i can make the whole thing out of div’s. but i still need help.
