Support » Fixing WordPress » How to change the thumbnail crop position?

  • Ryan

Hi, I’ve hunted around the forum and docs but found nothing on how to change the position of the thumbnail crop, or whether it’s even possible.

So, anyone happen to know how to do this? What I mean by the “crop position” is the location at which the image is cropped. For example. I have a 600×400 image, but I want a 100×100 thumbnail of that image. WordPress intelligently scales down the largest side (width in this example) and crops a square from approximately the middle of the image.

However, I want the crop to be taken from the top most edge.

    Any ideas?

  • I have the same problem as you, if we look closely we can see that most of the picture crop placements we need are at the top of the images.

I was curious how wp handles that and I found that you can create a custom thumbnail for each image. When you upload image to the media library you can crop it us you wish and save for thumbnail. Just try it

I’m actually trying to figure this out myself. But if you need to change the crop position in Nextgen, I wrote a fix for it here. “CompRepairGurus Nextgen Crop Position Fix” I imagine WordPress uses a similar method. If I come up with anything I’ll update this post.

    Hope this helps someone… 🙂

Anyone find an answer to this? Is it possible with WordPress image editor?

I too am struggling with this same problem. Has anyone managed to resolve this yet?

AxelYa: How did you crop the thumbnail? When I try cropping and saving “apply changes only to thumbnail” using the media editor, it does not work.

I have the same problem as thompson.407.
