I want to change the widths of the content and sidebar divs, but I need to change the classes in the HTML (rather than “widths” in the CSS) because I’m working with a responsive theme (Skeleton).

and change: <div id="sidebar" class="five columns" role="complementary"> to <div id="sidebar" class="four columns" role="complementary">
I just can’t seem to find the code.
Can anyone give me any hints on where one might ordinarily find the HTML markup for blog posts ?
The HTML code is generated from the php files — but the specifics of which ones depends on your theme.
