How to add thumbnail images to events list & sidebar widget

Hi

I am using the free version and need to know if I have to upgrade to be able to do the below.
I have added a featured image which shows as a banner across the top but would like this to also show as a thumbnail at the front of each event my event page which lists all events. I have also added the latest events as a widget on the sidebar but again not pulling in any images, can you help please.

I also understand that users can create events from the from end without being admin, but how do I get a call to action button saying Create Events so people can click on it.
