I am quite inexperienced with this, but I’m trying to add some text to the left of my navigation menu. I’m using twentyten theme version 1.1, and I would like to have a single sentence appear just below my header, and to the left of the menu.
I have tried adding a ‘custom link’ by going to appearance-menus and adding it there, but it didn’t show up at all. Is it possible that I need to upgrade to the newer version of twentyten? And therefor I should create a child theme? Which is something I would like to avoid just because it seems like it should be simple enough to do, and I haven’t done the whole child theme thing before.
Or another thing I tried, was to just go into header.php, and add the text right below where my header is. Like this:
<?php // Check if this is a post or page, if it has a thumbnail, and if it's a big one if ( is_singular() && has_post_thumbnail( $post->ID ) && ( /* $src, $width, $height */ $image = wp_get_attachment_image_src( get_post_thumbnail_id( $post->ID ), 'post-thumbnail' ) ) && $image >= HEADER_IMAGE_WIDTH ) : // Houston, we have a new header image! echo get_the_post_thumbnail( $post->ID, 'post-thumbnail' ); else : ?> <img src="/newwickssite/wordpress/wp-content/themes/twentyten/images/headers/treeheader5.png" width="940" height="162"> *serving the greater montreal area <?php endif; ?>

The problem is it pushes my navigation menu down, and looks weird.
Does anyone have any ideas for me? Thanks in advance.

Yes. As is, any changes you’ve made to theme files will be lost. If you don’t keep the theme updated, you’ll likely run into compatibility issues sooner or later.
Okay.. I know that changes I’ve made to the theme will be lost when I upgrade the theme, but what I’d like to know, is will updating solve my problem? With the newer version of TwentyTen theme, will that allow me to place a bit of text to the blank area to the left of my navigation menu, and below the header?
Or is there a bit of code i could put in header.php, so that when I put in my text, it doesn’t push the navigation menu lower down?
I apologize for my inexperience, hopefully someone knows what im trying to do.
Updating won’t change anything in that sense no. This is likely a CSS question – not possible to answer without seeing a live site.
Yes the temporary url for the site is: http://thewicks.ca/newwickssite/wordpress/
So as you can see, on the right in the widget area, I have added the text I would like: ‘serving the greater montreal area’.
But I would ideally like that to appear just below the header image, to the left of the navigation menu. It would make it much more clear that it’s a Montreal company, and I think looks better.
But if I add that text into the header.php, it puts the text there as I would like, but pushes the navigation menu down.
