Support » Themes and Templates » how to add background color over top of background image?

  • hi there.

    i’m by no means a guru of CSS so any help appreciated! i’ve looked around but to no avail…
    i’m using the WP theme “RIO”

    and have my site prototyped here:

    i want to maintain a background image for the blog as i have it on the site, but would like to have the fixed width column of the blog set to a color so that the text reads on a flat bg color.

    the original ‘RIO’ CSS has the background image with a white band included in the .gif image. i’d rather not have to do this every time i want to change the background image…..

    any help appreciated.

    body code here: [if thats where the fix lies?]
    body {
    background: #FEFEFE url(“images/c-bg.gif”) center;
    background-position : top;
    background-repeat : repeat-y;
    color : rgb(128, 128, 128);
    font-size : 62.5%; /* Resets 1em to 10px */
    font-family : ‘Verdana’, ‘Arial’, Sans-Serif;

    Try editing style.css and changing:

    .post {
    margin:0 auto;

    .post {
    margin:0 auto;

    You might also want to add a class to the div holding your nav menu so you can add a background color to that as well.

    esmi thanks so much!

    i’ve never added a class before.. [newb]
    is this in the header.php?

    Possibly but could equally be in index.php etc. It’s just above <div id="area51">.

    hi again..

    i found it in the index.php page below. i tried to add this above the area 51 id
    <div style=”color:#00FF00″>

    but to no avail
    any leads appreciated
    not sure that i’m in the right place.

    <?php get_header(); ?>

    <div id=”area51″>

    <?php if (have_posts()) : ?>
    <?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>
