    Hello,

I’m very new to wordpress and was hoping that some WordPress Guru’s around here would be willing to help.

    I’ve installed the following plugins:
    – AddThis Sidebar
    – All in one SEO
    – Evermore
    – Google XML Sitemaps
    – Simple Tags
    – Subscribe to Comments
    – Ultimate Plugins Smart Update Pinger

I have no idea what most of the settings are and which ones are preferrable. In addition to the plugins, I don’t really know which settings are preferred for wordpress either.

I’ve used joomla in the past but have heard for blogs, wordpress is much better.

Can anyone please help me with the basic configuration or wordpress and the plugins mentioned above.

Err… Help you configure what? You didn’t actually ask any specific questions there.

    Some reading might help…

@jthornton I would love to help you with the configuration of the plugins you listed but I am only familiar with Subscribe to Comments and once installed you don’t have to do anything to configure it.

    thanks for the fast responses.

I’m not against doing the research myself, I just don’t know where to look.

I need help as to what settings I should use for wordpress and all of the plugins that I listed above.

I read the Options screen for each one and although some of them are self explanatory, I don’t know what to set some things at. Here is what I’m looking for help with:

    Under Options > General
    – Anyone can register?
    – Users must be registered and logged in to comment?

    Under Options > Writing
    – Default mail category: If sending posts by email, will it only post in this category or can I set it to post in a different category?
    – Also, can I set it up for Simple Tags to work when posting by email, or do I have to login for that?

    Under Options > Reading
    – For syndication feeds, should I show full article or summary?

    Under Options > Discussion
    – I’ve left everything with the default settings, should I change anything?

    Under Options > Permalinks
    – What is category base and tag base for?

Under Options > All in one SEO
    – What settings should I use here.. Currently:
    – Checked: Use noindex for Category, Archives
    – Checked: Autogenerate description

    Under Options > Simple Tags
    – I have no clue what to set here. There are a ton of sub-categories to configure. It’s talking about tags, tag clouds, rel=”noindex” on tags. I don’t know what any of this stuff is. I’ve left everything at the default settings.

Under Options > Subscribe to Comments
    – I’ve left everything at the default settings.

Under Options > XML Google Sitemaps
    – What do I set for post priority?
    – What should I include for sitemap content?
    – What should I set for frequencies and priorties?

Go and read ALL the articles at the link I gave above. Read. Learn. Experiment. Trial and error…

I guess I still don’t fully understand the questions here. What settings to do what?

I mean, you can use any settings you want. That’s why they’re settings. If there was only one way to do a thing, then there would not be a setting for that one thing.

What settings you use depends on what exactly you are trying to accomplish. So asking “what settings do I use” doesn’t make any real sense unless you have some goal in mind. What’s the goal?

Generally the default settings are the way to go unless you have some specific reason to change things around. We need to know what you want to accomplish, and then we can tell you how to accomplish it.
