How save my theme changes before update theme

    Ive made changes directly on my Twenty Eleven theme.
    Now there is a WP 3.9.1 & theme update, how can i save the changes ive made without lose anything before i make the updates?
    I heard there is something called Child theme that can help me to save my changes. is there any guide for this issue?
    What happen if i decide not update my theme?

    not so much, i just did on theme editor:
    remove the search from up header & add the show slider code.

    but i want to add/change more things and i don’t know if i should do it on original theme.
