How often does WP check my POP3 server for email posting?

  • I am currently set up with Gmail, and I have the info all punched in and everything.

    Two questions:
    1) Gmail says it requires SSL. Does WP use SSL to check the account? (I’ve asked about it on the IRC chan, and one guy said it works fine with Gmail, so I’m not too worried about this one.)

    2) How often does WP check my account for new emails to post up to the blog? I’ve asked about this one on the IRC chan, and I’ve heard the word “cronjob” thrown around, but I don’t know how to set one up. I don’t have root access to my hoster, but I can SSH into it. It is a Linux box. I’d like to avoid doing this though, and I’m wondering if there is a default setting to check.

    Thanks for all the help.

  • WP doesn’t automatically check for email at all. In order for blog-by-email to work, you’ll either need to setup a cron job to call the wp-mail.php file every so often, or (if your mail server supports it) set your mail server to run wp-mail.php whenever a new email is received. That’s how mine is setup (the 2nd option) and it works fine 🙂

Thanks for your help, I’ll ask my hoster on how to set one up.
