Support » Plugin: WooCommerce » How much time approximately to install and add items to shop?

  • Hi everyone,

I was asked for a quote and estimation on how much time I’d need to set up a shop on already existing WP site.

Say there would be a max of 10 products. I realise this is stretched and probably not enough info, but just approximately, for someone who’s never used this plugin and is more or less a WP newbie, how much time would I need to set it all up?

    Hi there!

It will depend on a lot of factors. Getting WooCommerce itself set up is not hard– the complexity comes in when you start to set up payment and shipping options. Depending how good you are at reading documentation, what forms of payment you’re looking to accept, and how many different ways you’re looking to ship products to how many places, I would set aside a couple of hours.

Adding and editing individual products is relatively fast, if you have all the information about the product (price, description, images) on-hand. To expedite the process I’d recommend importing the “dummy data” WooCommerce provides, which gives you a store’s worth of items which you can then edit (and delete) down, rather than creating each from scratch.

If your products are downloadable “virtual” (e.g. e-books rather than paperbacks) that will shave some time off setup. If you have something very straight-forward in mind– selling 10 different items that have the same shipping rate anywhere in the USA– setting up won’t take you long at all.

D Smith gave you some excellent tools to start estimating. Here are some other things to consider:

Is the theme installed on the site already compatible with WooCommerce? Some themes will not work “out of the box” so this will extend your project, potentially into territory that’s not easy for WordPress newbies.

How much of a WordPress Newbie are you? Do you know how to install themes and plugins? Do you understand how to make a backup and staging site so you can test your updates on as you’re working?

    Does your website have SSL?

Have you set up an eCommerce site before (e.g. on Shopify)? Do you understand how online shopping works? Credit card payments? PayPal?

Have the people who want you to set this up made ALL the decisions they need (including creating the product marketing text, photos, choosing and signing up for payment gateways, setting up the process for fulfillment)?

If you have all the content ready, the proper theme and hosting environment, and the payment information it could take a day to get it all done. If you don’t, it could take a few weeks or months.

Anyway, hope this helps you figure out how to estimate. If you have the ability to set up a test site with a shop, it would really help you figure out how to interpret all of the WooCommerce documentation (which is plentiful, but which uses a lot of WordPress-specific jargon that you’ll need to know).
