I have been using another jQuery menu system with drag-and-drop function that looks, from what I can see, a lot like yours. Two problems with that plugin is (a) it’s no longer being supported, and (b) I’m up to about 600 menu items (3rd level), about 45 top level, and I’m not going to count how many second level. While the menu still works from the user side, it’s gotten where I can add new menu items. The drag-and-drop has become drag-and-stop.

You can see the menu in operation at http://www.carbuzzard.com.

I would like to maintain the functionality while being able to add more links. Although I made the site, I’m definitely not a tech wizard, and code makes me curl up like Saran Wrap in a fire.

    Thanks.

    Hi Carbuzzard,

Are you currently using the Appearance > Menus page to manage your menus? If so I’m afraid switching to MMM will not help as it uses the same page.

The slowdown is due to core WordPress code, maybe this plugin will help and you can keep your current system: https://wordpress.org/plugins/faster-appearance-menus/

    Thanks, Tom,

Actually, I tried updating WP to current…I hadn’t changed for a while because, well, a long story. But the after doing the update, I can add menu items. It’s a slow process to add–as in it’s not instantaneous like everything should be these days, but it works well from the user side, and that’s the important part. And I can keep my current system. 🙂

    Hi carbuzzard,

I can only have 90 menu items on all menus. I see you have much more with your Mega Menu. How did you manage this many? and is your mega Menu a pro version?

Sorry, but I don’t know more. I’m not a techie. Show this boy code and he shrivels up like cellophane thrown into a fire. It’s not pretty.

The Mega Menu plugin isn’t being maintained anymore, but I had a website repair work on it once and did some sort of magic on it when I got up around 400 items, iirc. And then they did something before until I finally succumbed to their entreaties to change the site over to joomla. That dragged on until I threw in the towel and it never got completed. (There’s more to the but this isn’t the time nor place for hashing that out. I just walked away).

Anyway, I’m up to about 600 items now and it’s starting to slow down again. It’s starting to take time loading on the user side, and adding more items is becoming a matter of patience. Eventually it won’t take any more. [Insert sigh here] I don’t think that anyone will be able to help me at that time.

I can’t believe that with the millions of WP users there aren’t a bunch of people who would like to have multi-as in hundreds or more menus such as I have.

There was no pro version, just the one I have…for as long as I have it, and heaven forbid it should wind up with a vulnerability, as the site is focused around that menu.

C’mon out there in Plugin Developerland, there are two of us who want a solution to this problem. Surely there must be many many more. Or at least a workaround. Anyone?

Just to clarify, carbuzzard isn’t using Max Mega Menu (Max Mega Menu is most definitely still being maintained!)

Abezing: To increase the 90 item menu limit see this page: https://www.maxmegamenu.com/documentation/faqs/menu-item-limit/

Carbuzzard, many people have been looking at the problem over the past 6 years which shows how tricky it is to solve. It looks like there might finally be a fix in WP4.5 (see comments right at the bottom):

    https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/14134

With 600 items in your menu I think maybe you should look at dynamically generating your menu rather than manually adding each link. Maybe this plugin can help: https://wordpress.org/plugins/category-posts-in-custom-menu/

    Tom
