# How does WP detect theme updates?

 * How does WP detect theme updates so that it notifies you when one has been recently
   updated? Is this something that only occurs with themes submitted to WordPress.
   org, or can I host a theme on my own site but also somehow notify others of it
   as well?

 * On themes downloaded from wordpress.org, the Theme URL in style.css is polled
   for new updates. Not sure about other themes.
