How does WordPress differ from a LiveJournal Community

What makes a WordPress blog different from a LiveJournal Community? If my understanding is correct, a LiveJournal Community is just a blog with multiple contributors and some optional access controls for only those users to view the content, isn’t WordPress able to do all of that?

Yes, you can do exactly that in WordPress.

I’d say the only big difference is that with a self-hosted https://wordpress.org/ there’s no larger “WordPress Community.” Every site is self-contained, so participants will need to register for an account specifically at your site.

It’s a very different with a blog at https://wordpress.com/ which has its own WordPress.com Community and is much closer to what you experienced at LiveJournal.
