how does this work? horribly confused

  • Ok, I’ve created a custom menu called “social media” as per step 3

(Set up a custom menu in WordPress: Appearance > Menu — or: edit/enhance an existing menu — just add custom links to your desired services)

So now I add, what, http://www.twitter.com,, http://www.facebook.com? I’m sorry but I don’t grasp what this is asking of me. If this is all there is to it, why do we need a special plugin? Just completely baffled.

You need a special plugin so that an icon set can be added to the links provided by the menu. They work together.

By the same token, if you’re comfortable with html and css, you can upload your own social icons to the media gallery, and hand code the html/css and links in a text box that you place in a widget area.
