    How exactly does Simple Turnstile shortcode work? Can I place it on any page with a login form?

    The shortcode would need to be placed inside a custom form, with all the other fields between the <form></form> tags.

    If you are using a custom form, you may still require additional custom development for the verification side, to verify the Turnstile response on form submission.
