    WordPress.org

WordPress is a community-driven project that’s developed by and for people like you. Many thousands of people from around the world contribute to the project, and many millions of websites are powered by it. From large company websites to personal blogs, and everything in between, everyone can publish with WordPress.

    WordPress.com

WordPress.com is a commercial enterprise owned by Automattic, a company started by the founding developer of WordPress and staffed by full-time developers, designers, and support engineers. Automatticians (employees of Automattic) regularly contribute back to the WordPress software so that the entire community can benefit.

Indeed, Matt Mullenweg owns WordPress foundation,

and he also owns Com and Org

WordPress.org is not a business but .com is and they are both owned by the same people.

Yes, WordPress.com and WordPress.org were founded by Matt, but what point are you trying to reinforce?

There is just so, so, SO much misunderstanding in this topic. I’m going to attempt to explain; I’m not trying to be difficult or give you a hard time. Neither is Andrew, we’re just doing some reasonable explaining.

Well of course Jan, it’s a business, just like WordPress is 🙂

WordPress.ORG is not a business and no one gets paid to do anything here. No one. That’s not semantics that’s the honest truth.

    Well, WordPress still makes money:

for example WordPress premium costs $100 a year to host on their server

    That’s what I meant.

You’re mixing up WordPress.COM with WordPress.ORG. Again it’s not semantics .COM has little to do with .ORG.

WordPress.COM is a company owned and managed by the Automattic company. They have permission via the WordPress Foundation to use the WordPress trademark. But it’s just another service company built on the WordPress software. There are others but they do not use the WordPress trademark.

As I stated, I’m not here to make money from my website.

That’s up to you but this next statement totally contradicts that.

I was pointing out the fact that the affiliate links which you seemed to consider inappropriate are the exact thing as banner ads which are different types of monetization.

Monetization is making money off of your website. Again there is nothing wrong with that but transparency is important. Any posted links to a site like that would get redacted.

Making money is fine and encouraged just not in these forums. Anyone attempting to make money off of the forums would get a warning to cut it out. If they didn’t they’d risk getting banned.

NOTE: Plugin and theme authors are afforded the opportunity to reference their commercial products related to their plugin or themes. But they are all aware that commercial products are not for these forums and take their business to their own sites.

I came here to help people out, and won’t be mentioning my link in my comments.

That cheers me up and please feel free to help users in the forums. Just keep it all on the forums and not send users to your site for assistance. 😉

It’s my understanding that the WordPress foundation owns both. But didn’t you just say WordPress.org isn’t responsible for WordPress.com? And you said WordPress.com was misusing their trademark?

WordPress.org is not a business but .com is and they are both owned by the same people.

Yeah. No. Sorry, but while Automattic does provide resources to WordPress.ORG in the form of people and code they are just another set of contributors. There are others (I’m really liking what 10up is doing).

Please do not mistake the commercial efforts of Automattic with WordPress.ORG. They are 2 separate entities with different goals. Automattic has people who happen to contribute (many people) but anyone can get involved.
