Create a new page “blog”.
In Settings > Reading assign your posts page to this new “blog” page.
In the Appearance > Menu change your custom url to the new “blog” page.
Make sense?
Dashboard –> Appearance –> Menus
Change the link from the external site to the local one.
If I go to Settings > Reading and make the Front page Blog, yes the Front page will load blog and my posts.
But… when I make Front page Home and the Posts page Blog, then go and make the menu change to load Blog into the menu, it still links to the http://www.connectingnyc.org/blog/ page that has an empty “Index of /blog”

Remove your previous menu item for blog and link to the “page” blog instead.
You still have the custom url set up.

I had deleted the custom menu. So to be sure I deleted the menu item Blog. Then I deleted and recreated the blog page.
Then went to settings > reading and set Front page displays to “A static page” and Front page to “home” and finally Posts page to “Blog.”
And I still get the Index of blog from that Blog menu item.
What am I doing wrong?
That should have worked. Did you clear your browser’s cache? Do you have any wordpress cache plugins installed?
Try going to the blog page from your admin like you’re going to edit and view it from there…

Sorry, I just can’t think of anything else… go to the menu again and see if your changes are still there.
