Yes, you could install a server environment on your computer and then use WordPress locally. Follow this guide:

With the server installation, or are you trying the local installation?

I am also interested in word press. Not sure if it is compatible with yahoo servers. I have read the FAQ this seems a bit complicated for a novice. Can i experiment with this before hosting it. Is this beyond a novice users experience. Are there any video tutorials to help me with learning from scratch. Thanks

The application itself is very easy to install and use. Especially if you already have a web site and are familiar with a web hosts control panel and an ftp client.

    1) select a host that supports WordPress. If in doubt, you should contact them and ask specifics.

    2) follow the installation instructions, or install from the services in your hosting package, if offered.( A lot of that information is already covered in this thread. See above. )

Pretty easy stuff. It’s a little like reading from a cookbook.

Sure you can. If you are talking about building your own server, or installing a pre-configured server package on a desktop computer, and you have no idea what it involves, then yes. It’s going to be time consuming and a learning experience. But everyone starts somewhere. It just depends on your level of interest. But that’s actually more of a “computer knowledge” issue than that of a WordPress issue. WordPress is ready to go right out of the box. You just need to put it in a server environment that meets the minimum requirements.

I recommend you start by zipping to the top of this thread and re-reading all of the great information and following the links everyone has posted that already seem like they might address some of your questions.

Then you could take a look at the pre-configured development solutions that will allow you to try WordPress at home if you want to tackle that – WAMP, MAMP, XAMPP, etc… depending on your platform. There is a link four comments up, to an article on “installing wordpress on your own computer” that might contain additional options and information as well.

Or, you could test drive it by getting a free blog on wordpress.com. There are some limitations in the free version hosted at wordpress.com, but it’s good exposure to WordPress for almost zero effort.

Here is a great jumping off point in your search for information about installing and using WordPress.

You’ll get your MySQL connection details when you create the MySQL database both with your hosting provider and/or in a local server environment. Just follow the guides.

Each host is different, we can’t give you step-by-step instructions for every one. Just follow the guide:

Can wordpress.com host my wordpress downlaod?

No, but you can sign up for a free blog there.

I am trying to run WordPress on Laughing Squid. This is what I see:

    Your website is ready.
This site has been successfully created and is ready for content to be added. Replace this default page with your own index page.

I don’t know where to find this index page.

    Thanks!

What a great thread…. Makes me feel a whole lot better… just wish I’d got this kind of support with my little problem… I tripped on the finish line…. Anyways…

    Good luck AZ888
