Dunno about your hosting provider, but I rarely download themes and install them. I just install them from the Dashboard.

You will need to log into your FTP account and upload the file that way.

Also if you are downloading them from the WP theme directory you would probably be better off doing as peredur says and installing the theme within your WordPress admin area.

Thanks for the reply! I could install the theme from within the dashboard of WP, but it’s just that we also bought the theme from http://www.templatesold.com and download as zip file. i need to figure out a way to “upload” that to my WP site. I will try to set up a FTP acct on Dreamhost and upload it, hopefully it will be straight forward. Please let me know if anyone has similar experience with WP with Dreamhost. Have a good day!
An easier way than going to FTP is to upload the zip file directly through the admin page.
Go to Appearance > Themes and then click the ‘Install Themes’ tab at the top of the page. Once you’re there, simply click on ‘Upload’, browse to find your zip file and upload it!
** BE SURE ** that the zip file you’re uploading is JUST the theme. Often times when you download themes, they’ll include extra files like PSD’s or user manuals that are not included in the core theme files. You’ll want to check this by unzipping it and making sure it’s only the theme.
I actually have an account with dreamhost and I find all of their setups fairly easy. I don’t really use the automatic installers for my WP sites, I generally always setup FTP right away and upload the files myself. But adding an FTP account is fairly simple. Once you have your account setup, where you WordPress install is located find the wp-content folder, inside that you will find another folder called “themes”. Open that folder and upload the theme folder and you should be all set!

@alexball: When I go to Appearance > Themes, I don’t see “install themes” tab anywhere, not sure why.
