If there is any image in the post, there will be a featured image in the widget.

each ‘post’ has a ‘featured image’ that can be selected to display in some themes.
your widget does show an image from the selected post but it automatically selects the first image it sees. could i manually select an image to display via the ‘featured image’ ?
It should take the image, that is marked as ‘featured image’ in the post, first. Only then it should look whether there are other images and consider those.
I will have to that check out. When testing, it always took the featured image of my posts.
You actually found a bug. It takes the featured image from the post, but seems to forget doing something with it and pulls whatever image it finds first instead.
