[Resolved] How can you deal with review shillers?

  • Hey @esmi,

I have a person reviewing my plugin who disparaged the features, etc. and then posted a review of a competitor within minutes, praising them for theirs. The profile was created in the last 24 hours, so I’m almost positive they’re just shilling the new product and dissing mine to somehow improve their standing.

Can anything be done about this?

I’m sorry but this just sounds like part & parcel of plugin reviewing – especially when it is often non-technical users who are providing the reviews. Your best bet is to correct any mis-assumptions in your plugin’s review and, above all, try to retain a professional attitude when responding.

Sorry, you are not suggesting creating sock puppet accounts? That would lead to getting banned from these forums. Some of the moderators here get severe allergic reactions to sock puppets.

OK just me, but seriously it’s a really bad idea sock puppets. If someone leaves a bad review then leave a good reply and move one. A good reply from an author is worth much more than bad review and people do see that.

Thanks for the input Jan & Esmi. Rest assured, I will not be doing that. I haven’t needed to and don’t plan on starting now.

My point is that the profile above has the smell of a sock puppet account. Created 24 hours ago. Up with a competitor, down with mine. No other feedback. Plugin they rated highly is fairly new on top of that. I’m certainly no stranger to negative feedback and respond with professional tones. This just seemed a little too coincidental to let slide without raising some questions.

If you get a lot of these reviews where the same account is rating a competitor plugin highly, then please contact the forum’s mailing list and we’ll look into it. But with just one review, there’s nothing we can do.

    Copy that, will do.

    Hey @esmi,

There’s a user doing the same thing again–

    Negative review for me: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/dated?replies=1
Negative review for another mutual plugin competitor: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/needs-work-11?replies=1
Positive review for SAME plugin as before: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/great-1768
Profile is less than 1 day old (today): http://wordpress.org/support/profile/floridaguy92

Is this something you act on now?

I would bet that if you looked at IP addresses for these profiles, they are identical.

You could send that to the list but I can confirm that both of those users were sock puppets. Their posts have been deleted and their accounts have been blocked.

Additionally I will be keeping an eye on that other plugin and their reviews. That sort of behavior is not tolerated (I have a “thing” regarding sock puppets).

I am not accusing that other plugin author of anything but those reviews definitely got my attention.

Thanks Jan. I did send it, but I do appreciate your swift response here. You guys are great!

I see that the reviews got deleted, but my rating count is still showing +2 on the 1-star reviews. Is that something that will update on a cron job?

It’s a known thing and at this time the review count does not change.

That part I wouldn’t worry about as I said above “A good reply from an author is worth much more than bad review and people do see that”.
