Support » Fixing WordPress » How Can My Categories Be Specific RSS Feeds

  • Hello, I am new to a lot of this stuff and know that my blog is already a RSS feed.I see the categories as an effective way to present my intrests, such as music, and if I generate a category called “Music”, I would like to share it with some of my friends as an RSS feed, and not have that RSS feed include other items in my blogs like the uncategorized items or items I put in a category like Pictures.

Any guidance you can provide on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Dave

  • I believe this is done automatically by WP 2.x. Depending on your permalink structure, you should be able to access the feed for a particular category by:

    http://www.example.com/category/Music/feed/

Or, if you don’t have ‘friendly’ permalinks, and your Mucic category had a category of, eg, 4, you could probably get to it via something like:

    http://www.example.com/?cat=4&feed=rss

Note: for valid XHTML, if you include the example directly above in a clickable link, it should appear as:

    <a href='http://www.example.com/?cat=4&amp;feed=rss'>Feed for the Music Category</a>

Note the use of &amp; in the href instead of just &.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the reply.

Re “I believe this is done automatically by WP 2.x. Depending on your permalink structure, you should be able to access the feed for a particular category by:

http://www.example.com/category/Music/feed/“, please expand upon permalink structure. On a browser, when I go to “http://www.davidegolden.com/blog/Dillon” (one of my categories I get final not found. If I go to “http://www.davidegolden.com/blog/Dillon” I still get file not found. This doesn’t surprise me, as I don’t see those folders which are my categories as files within the structure of my WordPress blog of “http://www.davidegolden.com/blog/david48_wordpress/”, which when I go there my blog is launched.

I am able to navigate to “http://www.davidegolden.com/blog/david48_wordpress/?cat=2&feed=rss”, however when I paste this into my aggregator, and I get all information related to my blog, not just those related to this category.

Your guidance would be greatly appreciated.

and I can ensure that is a valid RSS feed

    http://www.example.com/?cat=4&feed=rss

Thanks. It appears to work 🙂

planetthoughtful: Nice overview of the solution.

A problem, however, is that the feed title does not display the category. This means that a user subscribing to several category feeds from one sites will not be able to tell them apart (other than guessing by its content).

    Any workaround for this?

To use something like “http://www.example.com/category/Music/feed/” as your feed. You would need to setup the permalinks by going to options -> permalinks in the site admin. There you will find a few prepared versions of permalinks. You can also put together your own. To make them work, you will need to either make your .htaccess file writable or edit it yourself with the provided code.

Okee her is my problem..using the structure:

    http://www.example.com/?cat=4&feed=rss

I get a feed but all the formatting on the post is stripped out and the formatting is gone..ir’s just a string text..any suggests?

Deja vu, could’ve sworn I just saw this question elsewhere…

What if you use this feed: http://georgethirteen.com/g13blog/?cat=6&feed=rss2

LoL sorry about that…. I just saw the second relevant post and thought I should double up..been posting about this on the k2 forum for a while now..without much help…..Works great now!!!!
    Thanx again!!
