How cache options work?

    Hi, I would understand how cache option work in ASA1. I set Cache Lifetime in 12 hours, this means that every 12 hours plugin refresh cache for all asin used by plugin in the site (thousands) in one time? Is this server cpu consuming?
    Or the cache is refreshed only when a visitor open a page?
