hosting problem or not?

  • Hi everyone!
As a complete beginner, I require your help for many things:
    1. I used to be a wordpress.com user, and I recently installed wordpress.org, so I would like to know if there is actually a way to transfert my old blog to my new one?
    2. I took a free host for beginning (byethost), but I constantly have messages like “An unexpected HTTP error occured while resquest on the API” (sorry for the translation). So that I absolutely can’t do anything like changing the colors or create a new page.
    3. It appears to be fully impossible to load widgets by copy/pasting codes from specialized webssites (like widgetbox.com)

So, my question is: does all of my problems comes from the fact that i chose the wrong host, or is it something else to do?

    Thanks a lot for helping

  • Hi magrand,

I have found a handy guide for migrating wordpress.com websites:
Migrating a WordPress.com website to self hosted

Also, using widgets from a third party shouldn’t be an issue as long as you are comfortable manipulating code. Remember, you have complete access to the WordPress code and can manipulate it as you see fit. However, why use a third party paid service for widgets when there’s tons of free plugins for WordPress that will do the same thing.

As for the HTTP errors you are getting, this is likely due to the server configuration.

Thanks you, this will help a lot. However, it seems like i don’t hae access to the server configuration at all (http://ftp.byethost3.com/). This page doesn’t work at all. Do you have a clue about how to do that? (as I said, I’m a beginner :D)

You should be able to export your data from the .com site and then use a wordpress plugin to import that data into your self-hosted website. I’m not sure why you are trying to access FTP to do so. However you uploaded WordPress into your hosting account should give you the same access as FTP.
