• Hi – I have had a rummage through docs, guides, support etc and am trying to find a definitive guide to getting wordpress setup on a remote windows host with only ftp and http access (my client has purchased the hosting package without checking with me) Is it possible? Can any of you kind folk send me a link?

I have done loads of WP installs on various linux hosts with no probs, but having ftped the files over and made sure the php/mysql setup is there (phpinfo works) I am getting an unhelpful 500 internal server error before even starting and no way of knowing how to get other bits like the permalinks sorted, if I even get that far…

    All help appreciated
    Many thanks
    Claire

  • You need to be able to access a database management tool to install WordPress. You can’t do that through FTP.

The database is already created (by hosting company) and I have the usual access info already to go that WP asks for…so I didn’t think I’d need db access too?

Did the hosts also create a user with full privileges?

Try checking your site’s error logs for a more specific error message. Your hosts should be able to help you in accessing your site’s error logs.
