Thanks for taking the time to read this post. I assure you that I scowered the forums and google trying to find a solution for this problem before I posted it here.

PROBLEM: My wordpress homepage ( displays the “Page not found (404)” error. This error is there no matter what I set my homepage to display (either latest posts or any static page).

You’ll see that the one other page in the navigation (join now) works just fine.

Yes, I do have posts, 4 of them and the error appears even when I set the homepage to a static page that works otherwise (meaning when it is not set as the homepage).

I am somewhat of a wordpress newbie, but am fairly technically capable. I tried a couple of things with the index.php file in my root folder through FTP, but to no avail. And now I have reset all of the changed files to their defaults.

    Please help!

I found out that one of my plug-ins “redirection” was causing the problem. Thanks for the time of anyone who had given any and to all those who in the future might have given… haha

I had the same exact problem and was just short of ultra panic…but then I searched and found this posting, and the redirection plug in was creating the problem for me as well.

Thank you so much for sharing this, even if it was just a conversation with yourself…. =)

same problem here …. any idea why this is? greatful for the post tho!

We had three sites using the redirection plug-in. All of their homepages showed the 404 page not found error. Of course it had to happen after work and on Friday the 13th too. Thanks for the post so I can get back to my Friday night. 🙂

Yes, same thing happened to me with one of our sites. Can’t figure out why.

After a recent WP upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.7.1, and Redirection from 2.1.4 to 2.1.13, the following occurs, even with all plugins turned off except for Redirection:

When going to root page (, the home page returns the 404 error page.

    * Home page is the index.php page.)

    * Reading Settings: Front page displays (x) Your latest posts

I think this may have something to do with the .htaccess file. Make sure it is in the root directory for wordpress and that it has the correct permissions.

One other thing to check is if you have changed your Permalink settings after you made the redirect with redirection. Is so, just delete the redirection redirects, save you permalink settings again and then go add your redirects.
