Homepage loading very slowly and missing tags and category links in sidebar

    Within the last few days my site has developed a problem I can’t figure out: The homepage at blog.drysdaleandco.com is suddenly extremely slow to load and when it does the links in the sidebars to categories and tags are missing.

    However, on individual posts and pages the site looks as it should with the correct sidebar links.Eg: http://blog.drysdaleandco.com/2011/08/paperblanks-2012-agendas-now-in-stock.html
    But if you click the category or tag links on those correct sidebars the load time is also very slow and the sidebar links may or may not disappear again (I seem to get different results with each new test).

    I can’t figure out why this has suddenly happened, or how to fix it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

    Thanks.
    I tried the first three but nothing changed.
    To re-upload the wp-admin and wp-includes folders can I just overwrite the existing folders on the server or do I have to do a complete upgrade?

    You can just replace those folders by deleting them and then uploading the fresh copies.

    Thanks very much for your help esmi.
    I tried all the suggestions you made except replacing the folders and nothing seemed to help. I left the site alone for a few days over the long weekend and was about to replace the folders yesterday when I noticed that the problem seems to have fixed itself. Strange.
    Not sure if my web host was making changes to the server that could have affected things. He says not but the issue was there and now it’s gone.
    Anyway, seems all is OK now.
